Understand me… but you will probably be more confused!

Stole this idea from here … Instead of doing a comment, I thought I would just run with the blog. The original is a missive from Jessica at “Branches” entitled “Five Things You Should Read/Watch/Listen To If You Want to Understand Me”. (Limit yourself to five books, movies, or songs that define and/or formed you.

This is a very intriguing idea, and considering how eclectic my usual choices are, there is a distinct chance you will be more confused at the end of this than when you started. Restraining this to 5 is hard, since music and books are like air for me. I will stick to books for this iteration.

#1: The Clan of the Cave Bear – This book more than anything awakened that yearning to know more about where we came from and what lead us to evolve. As the series develops it makes you wonder if it really was as simple as “I like this, let me try teach others” or if there were other factors involved as well.

#2: Anita Blake – ALL of them. The whole thing with shapeshifters and mythology is a big factor, but completely honestly, its the sex. These are written in such a way that I have gone searching for just those sorts of interactions. Hot, heavy and all consuming!!

#3: Charlie Parker series by John Connolley – History teems in these books. Along with the sheer horror and ease at which you can sympathise with the bad guy. We are all good and bad and which one wins, depends on the day.

#4: The Hobbit & Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkein – The ability to relate this to so many ongoing things in the world. The realisation that no matter how noble the cause, there is sacrifice in some manner or form. Even if it is just the memories that you carry forever.

#5: The 5 people you meet in heaven by Mitch Albom – We are all connected. Best line: ” We think it attacks the person we hate, but hatred has a curved blade, it also attacks us “ We need to forgive.

There are my top 5 books – this list should be a LOT longer, but I will stick to those 5. I cheated a little and some are authors, but you get the idea. Thank you Brian for another interesting little foray 🙂

  1. This was terrific! I was already enamored with your truthful words (“but completely honestly, it’s the sex”) but this just upped it a notch. Personally, I think the world would be a better place if we all say what we mean and mean what we say, if you’ll pardon my theft of a words that have been better expressed. And, if you’re keeping score, I completely agree with three of your choices but I am irresponsibly ignorant of the other two. I’ll leave it up to you to decide which is which… 😉
